I graduated in 1993 from UNM with a MFA in painting and drawing. I built my own home/studio with strawbale construction in 1995.
My work is contemporary and abstract, and is influenced by the abstract expressionist of the 1950’s. Mark Rathko, Hans Hoffman, Franz Kline, Arshile Gorky, and later in the 60’s, Joan Mitchell and Richard Diebenkorn, Sean Scully. I am also influenced by artists like Anslem Kiefer that add tar, straw and other stuff to their work.
While in graduate school I started using wax as an extender to my oil paint and really like the matte finish it gives to my work. I am constantly experimenting with different mediums and am currently involved with ‘joss’ paper, a Chinese paper used for religious purposes.
